Lieutenant Colonel R. D. “Mike” Michael hails from Florence, AL and enlisted in the Marine Corps in January 1991. Following boot camp at Parris Island, SC and Marine Combat Training, he was assigned to the Basic Hygiene Equipment Operator Course (MOS 1171), and received orders to 9th ESB, Okinawa, Japan. In August 1992, he received orders and was graduated from Marine Security Guard School with subsequent orders to the American Embassy Guatemala City and the American Embassy Rome. In May 1995, he separated from the Marine Corps to pursue educational interests including a work-study in Central America, and completion of his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of North Alabama. He was commissioned a 2ndLt in June 1999, attended The Basic School and Ground Supply Officer Course, and assigned as the Ground Supply Officer, MTACS-18 and MASS-2.
In August 2003, LtCol Michael received orders to the Marine Detachment Keesler Air Force Base where he served as the Operations Officer and Executive Officer. In August 2005, he attended Expeditionary Warfare School, Quantico, VA.. Following graduation, he was assigned to the Command Element, 22d Marine Expeditionary Unit, serving as the Supply Officer, Forward Logistics Planner and Contracting Officer for LF6/7F Deployment 2-07. Following the MEU Deployment, LtCol Michael attended the Advanced Contracting Officer Course. Upon designation as a Contracting Officer (MOS 3006), he was assigned as the Operations Officer and Director of the Regional Contracting Office-Far East.
In June 2011, LtCol Michael was selected to serve as the Aide-de-Camp to the Commander, ISAF Joint Command, Kabul, Afghanistan. Following his deployment in June 2012, LtCol Michael was assigned as the Executive Officer, 3rd Supply Battalion, Okinawa, Japan, and then as the Korea Planner, 3rd Marine Logistics Group from June 2014-August 2015.
From August 2015-June 2017, LtCol Michael attended Command and Staff College and School of Advanced Warfighting (SAW) where he graduated with Master’s Degrees in Military Studies and Military Operational Studies. LtCol Michael’s previous assignment was the Lead Planner, 3D Marine Aircraft Wing. LtCol Michael’s personal decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with two gold stars, and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.
LtCol Michael and his wife, Christian, have been married since 1995 and have two children, Javier, and Andrea.
