CAMP FALLUJAH, Iraq -- The Combat Logistic Battalion 5 theatre here was filled with sadness and memories today as the Marines, sailors and soldiers of the unit gathered to memorialize a fallen comrade.
Service members gathered to remember Sgt. Justin L. Noyes, an explosive ordnance disposal technician assigned to 1st Explosive Ordnance Disposal Company, 1st Marine Logistics Group, who was killed in action while operating in Al Anbar Province July 3.
The memorial gave the unit time to reflect, pray and remember Noyes, who was able to find laughter in any circumstance, according to his friends.
After the initial prayers and bible readings, Noyes’ friends and fire team members spoke about their memories with him.
“Justin had the ability to find fun and joy in any situation,” said Master Sgt. Scott M. Ingbretsen, 3rd EOD platoon member, 1st EOD Company, 1st MLG.
Noyes was also known for being vocal about his love for his wife and family.
“Although he’d been around the world, he never forgot where he came from,” said Staff Sgt. Ronald Wilkens, EOD technician, 1st MLG.
He was also known for the support he provided for his Marines, whether it was personal or professional.
“He was always willing to do anything for his teammates,” Wilkens said.
After the speakers finished, the Marines, sailors and soldiers honoring Noyes were brought to tears when the entire assembly stood and sang Amazing Grace, then lined up to pay their final respects.
Born Aug. 8, 1982, Noyes graduated Vinita High School in 2000 and reported for Basic Training on his eighteenth birthday at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego. Upon completion of boot camp and Basic Warrior Training, Noyes reported to Fort Still, Okla., for training as an artillery cannoneer. After completion he was stationed with the 2nd Marine Division at Camp Lejeune, N.C. Noyes reenlisted with orders to EOD School in Eglin, Fla., where he was awarded the title of EOD technician. After graduation Noyes received orders to Okinawa, Japan, to be stationed with the 3rd MLG. He deployed to Iraq Feb. 20, 2006, and served with the 1st MLG, Camp Fallujah, Iraq.
Noyes’ awards include the Purple Heart, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Presidential Unit Citation, Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbon, Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Korean Defense Medal, and Sea Service Deployment Ribbon
