Sergeant Major Reyst enlisted in the Marine Corps in October 1999. As an infantry assaultman, he was assigned to 1st FAST Company where he deployed in response to the bombing of the USS Cole and again to support Operation Enduring Freedom. After being promoted to Corporal he was given orders to 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines, where he deployed for Operation Iraqi Freedom. After returning from that deployment Corporal Reyst was honorably discharged from the Marine Corps in 2003.
Upon completion of his first semester of college in 2004, after hearing about the loss of his squad members in Iraq, Corporal Reyst re-enlisted and was assigned to 1st Battalion, 1st Marines where he again deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and was promoted to the rank of Sergeant. Sergeant Reyst then volunteered for recruiting duty and was assigned to Recruiting Station Milwaukee where he served as both a canvassing recruiter and an Officer Selection assistant. He was promoted to Staff Sergeant on this duty. After successfully completing his tour on recruiting, Staff Sergeant Reyst was given orders to 2nd Battalion, 4th Marines where he served as a rifle and weapons Platoon Sergeant. In 2011, while serving as 3rd Platoon Sergeant his unit was deployed to Musa Qala, Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
Upon his return, Staff Sergeant Reyst was screened and selected to be the Guard Chief at Naval Support Facility Thurmont (Camp David). He served in that role until 2015 when he was ordered to 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines and was promoted to the rank of Gunnery Sergeant. In three years with that unit, he served as Company First Sergeant for India Company and Company Gunnery Sergeant for both Headquarters and Service and India Company. During those years he deployed to Okinawa, Japan as part of a Unit Deployment Program and again as a member of the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit. Gunnery Sergeant Reyst was reassigned to Headquarters Company 5th Marine Regiment in March 2018 to serve as their Company First Sergeant. In July 2019, he was promoted to First Sergeant and was given orders to serve on I&I duty as Site Support Selfridge ANGB, MI. He served as the Site First Sergeant for Detachment Bravo, MWSS-471 until he was selected to his current rank.
Sergeant Major Reyst was given orders to report to Camp Pendleton to assume the position as Command Senior Enlisted Leader of 1st ANGLICO in July 2023. He remained there until May 2025 when he assumed his current position at 1st Maintenance Battalion.
Sergeant Major Reyst is married to the former Tera Jean Carson and has two children, Kayla and Matthew. His personal awards are a Meritorious Service Medal (3rd award), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (3rd award), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (2nd award), Combat Action Ribbon (2nd award), and the Presidential Service Badge.
