Master Chief 1st Medical Battalion
Master Chief Stewart Bruce Butler

Master Chief Petty Officer Butler enlisted in the Navy in September of 1994 out of San Diego, California.  He attended basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Illinois.  Upon graduation from Basic Training, Seaman Apprentice Butler received follow-on orders to Hospital Corpsman “A” School located at Naval School of Health Sciences, San Diego, California.  He was then assigned follow-on orders to Naval Medical Center San Diego, California, where he was appointed to the Health Promotions Department as an administrative assistant for the Health and Wellness Programs and soon promoted to the rank of Third Class Petty Officer.  In March of 2000, Petty Officer Second Class Butler was reassigned as the Leading Petty Officer (LPO) of the Critical Care Unit under the Directorate of Nursing Services.

 

In June of 2000, Petty Officer Second Class Butler reported to Field Medical Service School, Camp Pendleton, California, with follow-on orders to 1st Radio Battalion, Marine Forces Pacific, Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii.  Petty Officer Second Class Butler was assigned as Preventive Medicine Representative and responsible for identified battalion assets for 11th, 13th, and 15th Marine Expeditionary Units and Battalion’s deployment in direct support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.  During his tour, he was meritoriously promoted to Petty Officer First Class under the Command Advancement Program. 

 

In 2003, Petty Officer First Class Butler reported to Naval Hospital Pensacola, Florida, where he was assigned as LPO of the Plans, Operations and Medical Intelligence (POMI) Office.  Just two years later, he received orders to report to 1st Marine Division, Camp Pendleton, California.  Upon Petty Officer First Class Butler’s arrival, he was assigned to I Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward) as an embedded military advisor for a one year deployment.  During the deployment he was selected and promoted to the rank of Chief Petty Officer.  Upon his return, Chief Petty Officer Butler was assigned to Headquarters Battalion as Senior Medical Department Representative (SMDR) then reassigned to Division Medical Training under the Surgeon’s Office where he was responsible for the training and professional development of all newly reporting Sailors to 1st Marine Division.

 

In June of 2008, Chief Petty Officer Butler transferred to Naval Health Clinic Hawaii, where he oversaw the day to day operations as Leading Chief Petty Officer (LCPO) for Human Resources Department, Operations Management, and POMI office and later reassigned as Senior Enlisted Leader, Branch Health Clinic Kaneohe Bay, Marine Corps Base Hawaii.  In January of 2011, Chief Petty Officer Butler reported to Maritime Civil Affairs & Security Training Command, Navy Expeditionary Combat Command, Dam Neck, Virginia, where he was assigned LCPO of the Medical Department and Team Chief for a Security Force Assistance Mobile Training Team.  Chief Petty Officer Butler delivered maritime expeditionary core instruction in support of Africa Partnership Station for security cooperation and foreign internal defense missions.  He deployed and trained foreign militaries in conjunction with planned fleet deployments, coordinated exercises, and regional engagement events. The training covered small boat tactics, maritime combat operations, anti-terrorism/force protection, and military professional leadership development.  His efforts provided critical training to partner nations that enhanced security and stability within assigned regions.  

 

In 2012, he then attended Independent Duty Corpsman (IDC) School at Surface Warfare Medical Institute, San Diego, California where he graduated with honors.  Upon graduation, Chief Petty Officer Butler accepted orders to SEAL Team THREE, Naval Special Warfare Group ONE, Coronado, California, where he was assigned as SMDR and deployed numerous times to Middle Eastern countries in direct support of counter terrorist operations.  Simultaneously, Senior Chief Petty Officer Butler was influential in the information exchange between Undersea Rescue Command and SEAL Team THREE Medical Departments to expand understanding of undersea systems, dive medicine, and recuse operations that further developed/expanded medical capabilities of both commands.  

 

In September of 2016, Senior Chief Petty Officer Butler reported to Naval Medical Center, San Diego, California where he was assigned as the Senior Enlisted Leader to Branch Health Clinic North Island, Naval Air Station, Coronado, which encompassed, Branch Dental Clinic Naval Amphibious Base, Coronado, Branch Health Clinic Naval Auxiliary Landing Field, San Clemente Island, and Branch Health Clinic Naval Auxiliary Landing Field, El Centro.  Master Chief Butler was promoted to his current rank in May 2018 and reassigned to the Directorate of Professional Education in August 2018 and assumed the duties as Senior Enlisted Leader. 

 

In December of 2019 he assumed his current duties as the Command Master Chief of 1st Medical Battalion, 1st Marine Logistics Group, Camp Pendleton, California.

 

Master Chief Butler’s personal awards include a Purple Heart, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (seven), Army Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (four), and various campaign and unit awards.  His warfare qualifications include: Enlisted Fleet Marine Force Warfare Specialist, Enlisted Expeditionary Warfare Specialist, and qualified Silver Deep Submergence Insignia.

 

Master Chief Petty Officer Butler is married with two children.
