Sergeant Major Sapp enlisted in the Marine Corps on 22 February 2000 and attended recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, California. After completion of recruit training, he attended Infantry Training Battalion’s School of Infantry-West aboard Camp Pendleton where he received the military occupational specialty of 0311, rifleman.
Upon completion of infantry training, Private First-Class Sapp was assigned to Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 1st Marines, 1st Marine Division. While serving with Charlie Company, he deployed on the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) to Pakistan and Afghanistan from 2001–2002 as a rifleman in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
Upon returning from deployment, he was promoted to the rank of Corporal and attended Infantry Squad Leaders course, Helicopter Rope Suspension Training, Military Operations in Urban Terrain, and Corporals course in preparation for his future deployment with the 13th MEU. While assigned to the 13th MEU, Corporal Sapp deployed to Um Qasr, Iraq and served as a squad leader conducting anti-oil smuggling and anti-terrorism operations in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
On February 1, 2004, he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and received orders to report to Weapons Field Training Battalion-West (WFTBN-W) where he was assigned the duties of combat marksmanship coach and combat marksmanship instructor. While serving at WFTBN-W, he attended Coaches course, Primary Marksmanship Instructors course, Martial Arts Instructors course, Sergeants course, and Infantry Unit Leaders.
On September 29, 2006, Sergeant Sapp received orders and reported to 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st Marine Division, where he served as a squad leader assigned to Echo Company. He deployed to Ar Ramadi, Iraq as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom 6-08 from where he conducted anti-terrorism operations. Upon return from deployment, he was promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant and served as a platoon sergeant with the 15th MEU.
On April 4, 2009, Staff Sergeant Sapp received orders to Marine Combat Instructor School, School of Infantry-West, where he served as a Combat Instructor with Infantry Training Battalion. While serving there, he was meritoriously promoted to the rank of Gunnery Sergeant and received orders to report to 1st Battalion, 6th Marines, 2D Marine Division.
Upon checking into 1/6, Gunnery Sergeant Sapp was assigned orders to II Marine Headquarters Group and served as the operations chief for the 7th Brigade Afghan National Civil Order Police, Security Force Assistant Advisory Team and deployed to Afghanistan from February to October 2013. Upon completion of his tour with the advisory team, he was reassigned to 6th Marine Regiment Headquarters Company where he served as the Headquarter Company Gunnery Sergeant.
Gunnery Sergeant Sapp was selected to First Sergeant in December 2015 and received orders to 8th Engineer Support Battalion (ESB). Upon arrival to 8th ESB, he deployed to Central America as the Logistics Combat Element First Sergeant for the Special Purpose Marine Air-Ground Task Force-Southern Command.
Upon completion of his tour with 8th ESB, First Sergeant Sapp received orders to Marine Corps Combat Service Support Schools where he served as the Ground Supply School First Sergeant. In 2018, First Sergeant Sapp was accepted to attend the Marine Corps Command and Staff College, where he earned a master’s degree in military studies. Upon completion of Command and Staff College, he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant Major and received orders to Combat Logistics Battalion-15 where he currently serves as the Battalion Sergeant Major.
His awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal W/ 4 gold stars in lieu of 5th award, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal W/ gold star in lieu of 2nd award, Combat Action, and the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal.
Sergeant Major Sapp is married to his wife Amanda, and they have three children. They currently reside in San Clemente, California.
