Marine engineers with 9th Engineer Support Battalion, 1st Marine Logistics Group (Forward), talk to local nationals to gather more information about their location during a route reconnaissance mission in Helmand province, Afghanistan, Sept. 1. Information such as the soil composition, the twist and turn of a path, the gradient of the route and any obstacles that might hinder trafficability is all considered when planning the route for future missions.
