Colonel John J. Wiener

Colonel John J. Wiener is currently serving as the Chief of Staff, 1st Marine Logistics Group.

Colonel Wiener was born at the Philadelphia Naval Hospital in 1968. Following graduation from Rutgers University in 1992, he enlisted in the Marine Corps where he served as an automotive mechanic with Marine Wing Support Squadron 473, Marine Wing Support Group 47, 4th Marine Aircraft Wing.

Following commissioning as a second lieutenant in 1993, he served as Platoon Commander and Operations Officer, Truck Company, Headquarters Battalion, 2d Marine Division deploying to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba in support of Operations SEA SIGNAL and SAFE PASSAGE. He also served as Motor Transport Officer, 3d Battalion, 6th Marines, 2d Marine Division deploying to Japan and South Korea as part of the Unit Deployment Program.

As a captain he served as Motor Transport Officer, 3d Battalion, 14th Marines, 4th Marine Division deploying to northern Norway as part of Exercise STRONG RESOLVE 98; he commanded Motor Transport Maintenance Company and Headquarters and Service Company, 3d Maintenance Battalion, 3d Force Service Support Group; he commanded Combat Service Support Detachment 33, Marine Air Ground Task Force 4 deploying to South Korea in support of the Korean Incremental Training Program 99-2; he served as Operations Officer, Marine Expeditionary Unit Service Support Group 31, 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (Special Operations Capable) deploying to Australia and South Korea; he served as Operations Officer, 3d Materiel Readiness Battalion, 3d Force Service Support Group; and he served as Logistics Officer, 1st Battalion, Regimental Combat Team 7, 1st Marine Division deploying to Kuwait and Iraq in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM I.

As a major he served as Assistant Plans Officer and Assistant Operations Officer, G-4, I Marine Expeditionary Force deploying a second time to Iraq in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM II. He also served as Pacific Theater Plans Officer, J-4, U.S. Special Operations Command.

As a lieutenant colonel he served as Chief of Staff, Research, Development, and Acquisition Center, U.S. Special Operations Command; as Executive Officer, Combat Logistics Regiment 17, 1st Marine Logistics Group; and as Commanding Officer, Combat Logistics Battalion 15, 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit deploying to various countries in the western Pacific, Red Sea, and Arabian Gulf. Following his command tour, he served as Section and Branch Head, Program Analysis and Evaluation Division, Programs and Resources Department, Headquarters Marine Corps as well as serving as Principal Assistant to the Senior Executive Service-level Chairman of a North Atlantic Treaty Organization study on future budget constraints.  

Promoted to colonel in September 2016, he served as Assistant Chief of Staff G-4, 3d Marine Aircraft Wing; as Director, U.S. Marine Corps Forces Central Command Coordination Element in Bahrain; and as Assistant Chief of Staff G-4, 1st Marine Logistics Group before assuming his current position.

Colonel Wiener is a graduate of resident Expeditionary Warfare School and resident Marine Corps Command and Staff College where he graduated with honors. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Rutgers University and a Master of Military Studies degree from Marine Corps University. He also holds Acquisition Career Field certifications for both Life Cycle Logistics and Program Management.
