Maj. Gen. Melvin G. Spiese, the deputy commanding general of I Marine Expeditionary Force, stands at attention while being retired at Camp Pendleton, Calif., March 1. Spiese was retired by his long-time friend the Honorable Robert O. Work, Under Secretary of the Navy.
