Poll workers gather in Baghdadi, Iraq, outside one of Iraq's nearly 5,200 polling stations waiting to be searched by U.S. Marines, Jan. 29, 2005, before entering the site. As soldiers from the Iraqi Army provided security within the polling site, infantrymen with the 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment kept vigilant eyes from surrounding rooftops for any signs of intimidation or violence. The election will create a 275-member National Assembly and 18 provincial legislatures. The newly elected assembly will draw up the country's permanent constitution and select a president and two deputy presidents, who will name a new prime minister and Cabinet to serve for 11 months until new elections are held.
