Sgt. Maj. Dan L. Hakala assumed the leadership role of sergeant major of the 1st Marine Logistics Group at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, Calif., Jan. 25. Hakala previously served as the sergeant major of the Combat Logistics Regiment 1, 1st MLG. Hakala assumed the unit's top enlisted billet from Sgt. Maj. Jerry Cole, who retired after 29 years of service. Cole led the 9,000-Marine and Sailor strong unit in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom from February 2004 through January 2005. The 1st Marine Logistics Group provides combat service support, including logistical and medical support, to I Marine Expeditionary Force units. Hakala is a 48-year-old from Butte, Montana, and Cole is a 46-year-old from Gastonia, N.C.
