Setting a trend to walk the shores of Del Mar, several family readiness officers, military families and friends with 1st Marine Logistics Group finish their second beach walk here, March 24.

The FRO's of 1st MLG began their weekly walks as an opportunity to provide family readiness support for those left behind. The walks allow spouses and friends the chance to share thoughts and concerns with those who are understanding of the daily life of a military family member.

"The walk allows us to network, socialize and support each other," said Marianne Espinoza, 41, of Tucson, Ariz., family readiness officer, 1st MLG.

During the hour-long walk, participants spoke to each other about upcoming deployments, unit functions and life situations. The stress-free environment allowed participants to open up and speak freely about their concerns.

"The walk is a more casual way of speaking to FRO's and military spouses," said Leah L. Prouty, 39, of Hartford City, Ind., family readiness officer, 1st Medical Battalion, Combat Logistics Regiment 15, 1st MLG. "The walk is a great place to get support."

Per Marine Corps Order 1754.6A, family readiness is defined as families who are prepared and equipped with the skills and tools to successfully meet the challenges of the military lifestyle. Family readiness directly affects the fundamental purpose of the Marine Corps, which is to make Marines and win battles by building commitment and raising morale, thereby increasing unit readiness.

As they walked more than two miles of shoreline, the participants left with newly founded friendships.

"The walk is a great opportunity to come out to get fresh air, exercise and meet new people," said Christine A. Fenwick, 31, from Seattle, Marine spouse. "You can share your trials, tribulations and joys with one another."

To participate in the weekly beach walks, individuals can find the 1st MLG FRO's banner on Delmar Beach every Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. For additional information or questions regarding the family readiness program contact your unit's designated family readiness officer.
