Captain Thomas Matson is a native of Marengo, IL.. He graduated Olivet Nazarene University in 2011 with a degree in history and a minor in economics. Thomas entered Recruit Training at MCRD San Diego in May of 2008.
Upon graduating recruit training, Pvt Matson checked into Weapons Company 2nd Bn 24th Marine Regiment as a basic Marine. In the summer of 2009 PFC Matson attended and graduated the Officer Candidates School Platoon Leaders Course (PLC) Juniors Course. In the summer of 2010, LCpl Matson went with Weapons Company to Agadir, Morocco supporting Exercise African Lion. Upon return from African Lion, LCpl Matson attended and graduated PLC Seniors course.
Once LCpl Matson graduated college, he commissioned as a 2ndLt in August of 2011 and was employed by Delta Air Lines as a ramp worker until he was brought on active duty to attend TBS in March of 2012. Upon completion of TBS 2ndLt Matson completed Civil Affairs Officer Course while waiting to attend Logistics Officers Course. Upon completion of Logistics Officers Course in June of 2013, 2ndLt Matson received orders to 3d Battalion, 12th Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division.
Upon checking into 3/12 in July of 2013, 2ndLt Matson was assigned the billet of Maintenance Management Officer and in August was promoted to 1stLt. While serving at 3/12, 1stLt Matson filled the billets as the full-time S-4A, MMO, GCSS-MC Using Unit Account Manager. In August of 2015 1stLt Matson received a Navy and Marine Corps Achievement medal for actions during his time at 3/12, he then departed for Headquarters Regiment, 1st Marine Logistics Group.
Upon checking into 1st MLG in August of 2015, 1stLt Matson was assigned to the Headquarters Regiment S-3 as the assistant COPS officer, and eventually the COPS OIC. In February of 2016, 1stLt Matson was promoted to Captain. In July of 2016, Captain Matson was sent TAD to MEF G-3 for assignment to Task Force Al Asad, ROTO 4.
Upon checking into Task Force Al Asad, Captain Matson began to conduct pre-deployment training and serve as the TF S-4A as well as Foreign Security Force Advisor. Upon arrival at Al Asad Air Base in December of 2016, Captain Matson began advising the 7th Iraqi Army Division’s Transportation and Logistics Battalion in their operations against the Islamic State in west Al Anbar Province. While deployed Captain Matson supported numerous coalition partners, to include: Danish, UK, Norwegian, Czech, Polish, and Australian army. Upon redeployment in August of 2017, TF Al Asad was released back to Headquarters Regiment, 1st MLG. Captain Matson was awarded a Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal upon completion of the deployment.
Upon checking back into Headquarters Regiment in September of 2017, Captain Matson was assigned to the MLG G-4 as the Operations Officer. Taking the lead on all MEFEX/G-3 led events ensuring that the G-4 can appropriately support all requirements within the MLG.
Captain Matson is married to Ksenia Matson, they have one child, Henry Donald Matson III age 2, and are expecting another child in January of 2019. In his free time, he enjoys traveling to Eastern Europe with his wife, snowboarding, and working out.
