Colonel James R. Hensien Commanding Officer, Combat Logistics Regiment 17

Col Hensien was born and raised in Grosse Pointe Woods, MI. He graduated from the University of Michigan and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in May 1991. Following graduation from The Basic School he reported to the Assault Amphibian Officer’s Course at Camp Pendleton, CA for training. 


In March 1992, 2ndLt Hensien was assigned as a Platoon Commander with Company B, 2d Assault Amphibian Battalion, 2d Marine Division in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. During that tour he deployed as the Assault Amphibian Platoon Commander attached to Battalion Landing Team 3/2, 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU). After being selected for augmentation, 1stLt Hensien reported to the Logistics Officer’s Course at EWTGLANT, NAB Little Creek, VA for training.


From 1995-2000, Capt Hensien’s first tours as a logistics officer included assignments with III MEF Headquarters Group and the III MEF Command Element in Okinawa, Japan, and three deployments with the 22d MEU Command Element based at Camp Lejeune. 


In 2001, Maj Hensien served as a Congressional Fellow in the office of Representative Jo Ann Davis of Virginia. Following that assignment, he was assigned to Installations and Logistics, Headquarters Marine Corps as the Military Construction Project Officer. 


From 2003-2006, Maj Hensien was assigned to 2d Transportation Support Battalion, 2d Force Service Support Group in Camp Lejeune. During that time he deployed to Iraq as the Commanding Officer of Company B, a multi-functional transportation company. That tour included 15 months as the Battalion Operations Officer and Detachment Officer-in-Charge.


In 2006 Maj Hensien reported to the Joint Improvised Explosive Device (IED) Defeat Organization for duty as the Director of the Operations Lab at the Counter-IED Operations Integration Center.  In 2008 LtCol Hensien assumed command of Combat Logistics Battalion-11 and deployed to the Western Pacific, Indian Ocean and Persian Gulf in support of the 11th MEU. 


In 2011, LtCol Hensien graduated from the National War College and reported to United States Africa Command for duty in the J9 Partnership Division. Col Hensien was promoted to his current rank in Sep 2013 and he reported to 1st Marine Division in July 2014 to serve as the Assistant Chief of Staff for Logistics. He assumed his current duties as Cheif of Staff in June 2016. 


He is married to the former Betsy Bartels, the daughter of a retired Marine. Jim and Betsy have three daughters: Sydney, Megan and Phoebe.
