LtCol Thompson was born on 27 July 1973 in Uvalde, Texas, and was raised in Jourdanton, Texas where he graduated from high school in 1991. He initially attended Abilene Christian University after high school, but enlisted in the Marine Corps in April 1994. After completing his undergraduate education at Prairie View A&M University, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science, he was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Marine Corps in May 1998.
Following The Basic School and the Logistics Officer Course, he was assigned to Charlie Company, 1st Transportation Support Battalion, 1st Force Service Support Group. During his time with the Battalion, he served as a Motor Transport Platoon Commander, Logistics Officer for Combat Service Support Detachment 19, Assistant Operations Officer for Combat Service Support Detachment 17, and Executive Officer for Support Company. In August 2001, Capt Thompson was assigned to MEU Service Support Group 11 as the Transportation Support Detachment Commander. Upon the completion of his deployment with the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) (Special Operations Capable) in December 2002, Capt Thompson was assigned as Company Commander, Combat Service Support Company 192, Combat Service Support Battalion 19, in support of Operations ENDURING FREEDOM and IRAQI FREEDOM.
He returned from Iraq in July 2003 and was assigned to the Marine Barracks, Washington D.C. as the Assistant Logistics Officer from August 2003 to August 2005. While at the “Oldest Post of the Corps,” Capt Thompson also served as a Ceremonial Marcher for events throughout the National Capital Region to include the historic Tuesday Sunset and Friday Evening Parades in Washington, D.C. From August 2005 to May 2006, Capt Thompson attended Expeditionary Warfare School (EWS), Marine Corps University, Quantico, Virginia.
Upon graduation from EWS, Capt Thompson reported to 1st Battalion, 5th Marines as the Battalion Logistics Officer. During his time with Battalion Landing Team 1/5, he with the 31st MEU and 11th MEU. In June 2008, he transferred to the 1st Marine Division staff, where he was promoted to Major and served as the G-4 Plans and Operations Officer until April 2009. In April 2009, he returned to the Fighting Fifth Marine Regiment where he served as the Regimental S-4 Officer until June 2010.
In July 2010, Maj Thompson reported to Plans, Policies, and Operations (PP&O), Headquarters Marine Corps. Upon arrival he was deployed and served in the G-3 Operations section of U.S. Marine Corps Central Command (Forward) (MARCENT (FWD)) in Bahrain. Maj Thompson completed his tour with MARCENT (FWD) in April 2011 and returned to his assignment with PP&O as the Current Operations Officer/CMC Briefer.
Maj Thompson completed his PP&O tour in June 2013 and reported to Combat Logistics Battalion 1 (CLB-1) as the Operations Officer. He served in this billet until April 2014 when he was re-assigned as the Battalion’s Executive Officer. During this time, CLB-1 was deployed to the Southern Helmand Province in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM 14-2. He completed his tour at CLB-1 in April 2015. Maj Thompson was then assigned to I Marine Expeditionary Force staff (G-4) where he was promoted to his current rank in September 2015 and served as the G-4 Operations Officer for the 1st Marine Expeditionary Brigade, the I MEF G-4 Future Operations/Plans Officer, and Operations Officer.
LtCol Thompson is married to LtCol Suzan F. Thompson of Marco Island, Florida. She is a Marine Corps Judge Advocate and is currently serving as the Staff Judge Advocate at Marine Recruit Depot, San Diego. The Thompsons are proud parents of one son, and one daughter.
