Sergeant Major Burkett enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1994 and attended Recruit Training at Parris Island, South Carolina. Upon graduation, he was meritoriously promoted to Private First Class and reported to the School of Infantry for Marine Corps Combat Training at Camp LeJeune, North Carolina. He remained at Camp LeJeune where he attended Supply Administrator School at Camp Johnson. Upon completion of MOS school, he reported to Marine Air Support Squadron 1 at Cherry Point, North Carolina. In 1996, he was meritoriously promoted to Corporal.
In 1997, Sergeant Major Burkett reported to Marine Security Guard school at Quantico, Virginia and upon graduation was assigned to Marine Security Guard Detachments Paris, France, and Ankara, Turkey. While on Marine Security Guard Duty, he was meritoriously promoted to Staff Sergeant.
In 2000, upon completion of Marine Security Guard duty, Sergeant Major Burkett reported to Marine Corps Logistics Base, Albany, Georgia. He served as the G3 Assistant Operations Chief as well as the Chief Instructor of the Corporals Leadership Course. Sergeant Major Burkett attended the Career Course at Camp LeJeune, North Carolina and graduated as a Distinguished Graduate.
In 2003, Sergeant Major Burkett reported to the Staff Noncommissioned Officer Academy, Marine Corps Base, Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. He served as the Supply Chief, Instructor, and later Deputy Director of the Academy. He attended the Advanced Course at Quantico, Virginia and graduated as the Honor Graduate. Additionally, he was selected as the Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps Writing Award recipient.
In 2005, Sergeant Major Burkett was named the Academy's Instructor of the Year and was selected as the recipient of the Elihu Rose award, which designates Marine Corps University's most outstanding enlisted educator.
In 2006, Sergeant Major Burkett reported to CSSG-3 at Marine Corps Base, Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. He deployed as an individual augment to Iraq with 9th Engineer Support Battalion as H&S Company Gunnery Sergeant. Upon returning, he deployed to Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia in support of the Marine Enlisted Liaison Development Exchange Program. While in Kaneohe Bay, Sergeant Major Burkett completed Amphibious Warfare School Phases I and II as well as the Command and Staff Distance Education Program at the College of Continuing Education.
In 2008, Sergeant Major Burkett reported to 1/11 at Camp Pendleton, California and served as the Alpha Battery First Sergeant. During this tour, he deployed with the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit with Battalion Landing Team 2/4. In 2010, Sergeant Major Burkett reported to Marine Corps Embassy Security Group in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates and served as the Region 2 1stSgt. He attended Senior Enlisted PME in Quantico, Virginia. in 2012, he reported to Marine Corps Security Force Regiment, Norfolk, Virginia and served as the Headquarters Regiment 1stSgt.
In 2013, Sergeant Major Burkett reported to Marine Corps Security Force Battalion in Bangor, Washington and served as the Battalion Sergeant Major. In 2015, he reported to 1st Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion and served as the Battalion Sergeant Major. In 2016, Sergeant Major Burkett deployed to Iraq where he served as the Sergeant Major of Task Force Al Asad. In 2017, he reported to Marine Corps Embassy Security Group where he served as the Group Sergeant Major. In 2019, Sergeant Major Burkett reported to Joint Task Force - Guantanamo where he served as the Command Senior Enlisted Leader. In September 2020, he reported to his current assignment as the Sergeant Major of 1st Supply Battalion, Camp Pendleton, California.
Sergeant Major Burkett's personal decoration include: Defense Superior Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with three gold stars in lieu of fourth award, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with four gold stars in lieu of fifth award, Joint Service Achievement Medal, and Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with two gold stars in lieu of third award. He holds a Bachelor's of Science in Management from National University and is pursuing a Master's in Business Administration from the College of William and Mary.
